Lou Ambers

Titles: Lightweight champion 1936-1938, 1939-1940

Record: 86-8-6 (29 K.O's)

Born: August 11, 1913 in Herkimer, New York (USA)

Years active: 1932-1941

Nickname: The Herkimer Hurricane

Ambers was an excellent boxer and a very good champion. He held victories
over Tony Canzoneri and Henry Armstrong among others, Ambers was a 2 time
lightweight champion when it meant something. Ambers was never a very
strong puncher but his work rate gave him the advantage in most fights.
He only lost one time in his first 46 fights to former champion Tony
Canzoneri but in his very next fight defeated future champion Fritzie
Zivic, Ambers fought thru a badly broken jaw in that bout. He would win
his title by avenging his only defeat by Canzoneri via points. He would
also defeat him in a rematch. The great Henry Armstrong took the title
from Ambers via split decision but once again Ambers proved his worth by
winning a rematch. He would loose the title again the next year to Lew
Jenkings in the only fight that saw him stopped. Jenkings is the one man
who Ambers could not defeat in a rematch. After he lost to Jenkings the
second time he decided to retire.
